Each month, DU Recreation recognizes one part-time staff member who exemplifies our values of Safety, Service, Accountability, Creating a Positive Experience, and Ethical Decision Making.
Many times, staff question the usefulness of CPR and First Aid training, as a large majority of the incidents in the building are not emergencies. However, the reason that Ritchie Center employees are required to emphasize safety in their trainings becomes apparent when we look at the actions of this months winner.
Recently, Maddy Rebol was working a rental shift when a mother, a spectator at the rental, who spoke very little English began acting hysterical and shaking her young infant vigorously. Instantly, Maddy sprang into action and ran over to the growing crowd around the mother, accessing that the infant was choking. She took the infant, asked for someone to go to the front desk and call 911, flipped her over in the proper Heimlich position for an infant and performed the procedure, dislodging a cheeto with two back blows. It is without a doubt that Maddy helped save the infant's life.
All of the Full Time staff would like to thank Maddy for her efforts, and for showing us how important these trainings are, even when used on someone who was not even participating in one of our programs.
Maddy will receive a DU fleece and her picture and story will be up on the intrarec staff corner.
